Gaol siar's Winter Solstice Gathering.
Gaol Siar closed a very successful 2013 with it's final event the Winter Solstice Gathering. After many attempts to plan this event amidst some of the worst storms seen in 80 years, the Winter Solstice Gathering went ahead.
After a relaxing start to the day with our introduction to yoga and meditation, followed by morning coffee we visited the Druids Temple in Blacksod. On the 21 December the sun descends between the two standing stones which are directly parallel to the two peaks on Corraun mountain in Achill.
Guests learned how our Celtic ancestors survived off the land and how understanding the seasons and solar patterns meant life or death, planting and harvesting were central to our Celtic ancestors survival. The Celts operated from the Solar calendar and closely observed the Sun and it's movements and erected structures on the land to confirm the movement of the sun to ensure planting and harvesting occurred at the right time. In Erris we have a wealth of these structures which hold thousands of years of wisdom for us to tap into.
After the challenge of the guided hill walk guests enjoyed a traditional Irish dinner of Irish Stew.
After dinner the guests enjoyed a personal reflections workshop where they were able to reflect on the day and set their intentions for the coming year.
A perfect close to 2013.
